Feb 17 - Sentry Peak (Antelope Island0

Mostly sunny day with highs around 40 degrees. But it's starting as a chilly morning with temps in the high 20s.

I arrive on the causeway to partly sunny skies but there is clearing to the west.

No activity, other than sea gulls and a few ducks, along the causeway this morning.

And no bison behind the VC. But there is a group of bison (~15) at the intersection of the road heading south and west. Also from that area I can see 3 bison on the lake bed heading south.

Moving south, I see bison in the rocks. I'm assuming the whole herd is still on the northern side of the Island so definitely no Gravel Pit trail today!

On the downslope from the Gravel is a lone Pronghorn. The only critter I see on my way to the Ranch.

The antelope herd that has been hanging out on the slopes under Beacon Hill for the last 2 weeks has moved on.

I reach the Ranch and the way to Sentry Peak is clear. I gear up and start toward the trail head. I do see at least on Bison hanging out at the Ranch. If I was planning on checking out the Owls in the woods, I would change my mind.

Very quiet walk. Trail is clear and surprisingly dry. Lovely views of the snowy peaks in every direction. Sentry Peak is clear of snow though.

I hear Chukkars on the 1st uphill to the long switchback but do not see them.

I reach the switchback and start across. On my way, I decide not to climb the rest of the way. I feel good but I just do want to push too hard as I haven't hiked much this winter.

I reach the end of the switchback and turn around and head back.

Lots of people on the trail today. Not sure if this is normal for a Saturday OR it's because bison are in the way on the northern trails and/or the Frary Peak parking is still near the road.

Anyway, it was a good day!
