March 29 - Antelope Island

Mostly cloudy day with highs in the 50s.

It's a work Friday but I get my 40hrs plus a little more for next week and head up to Antelope Island for a hike. Thinking about the Gravel Pit again because I still need to get back to work.

I reach the causeway and it looks like I might see some blue sky and sun!

I pass a Kestrel perched on a sign just past the gate.

Lots of water too on both sides due to a rainy few days.

The number of birds are increasing especially the Avocets!

As I approach the Island, I see 4 bison behind the VC. I pass them as I head south.

Also note that it's the Bison Run today. Lots of people running the Island -- not necessarily good for finding critters. :(

I also see bison on the rocks again. It seems they might have moved back to the northside.:(

Unfortunately, I get behind 2 very slow cars. I can't take driving the Island behind these 2 so after the Burrowing Owl hillside (none today), I U-turn and head to the Gravel Pit.

I park and start getting ready and then I look over to the trail and sadly see bison on the ridge.  Boo!

I have time so I decide to drive the Island. The bison should be having babies soon and I want to see.

But all I'm seeing are people running the Island.

I'm past the potty when I see some bison on the plateau. This was a huge herd last week and it's definitely much smaller.

I reach the Ranch and head back north.

I do find another herd.

I could hike Sentry or White Rock but I really need to get back to work so I decide to head home. Kinda a wasted trip but it's not the 1st time that's happened and probably won't be the last.

Looked at some of the shorebirds.

At least I got out.
