May 13 - Kehoe Beach (Port Reyes)
his hike is supposed to be flat. We'll see. It's also 2.5 miles and 95ft in elevation.
The hike is flattish and full of flowers as seems to be the norm. On the left is a marsh which is different. I'm only seeing Red-winged Blackbirds.
The trail does not have the variety of flowers as Tomales Bay trail or McClures. But it does have lots of yellow flowers -- looks like some Mustard Plant.
Oh! And White butterflies!
I also see them on the trail but they just won't land! :(
To my left and up a hill, I see a deer!
Closing in on the beach, There's a "No Dogs" Sensitive area branching off to the left. I see 2 people down there so I just head to the beach. At some point, I reach sand and very soft sand at that. Ugh!It's a trudge downhill (a little one) to the beach. To my left:
To the right, looks like McClure's Beach.
I see Curlew here too. I'm assuming they (and other birds) are nesting in the area because this is a beach where dogs are allowed but the sign says the right now, dogs are allowed to the south but not to the north.
Nothing too exciting about this beach so I make the trudge back up to reaching trail and start my way back thru flowers, more non-stopping White butterflies.I see a snake at one point; assuming some garter snake.
I also see another dark butterfly that doesn't stop. Very frustrating.
Well that ends the beach part of the afternoon.
My favorite beach so far is McClure's beach. Simply perfect.
